A Small City Built Around a Mill

Spray Foam Insulation in Parchment often starts with a house that has been around since the mill days. Parchment was settled in 1909, the same year Jacob Kindleberger founded the Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment Company along the Kalamazoo River. The company owned much of the land, rented houses to workers and financed workers' homes, and the city incorporated in 1939. Paper production ended in 2000.

What company-era houses need

Many early homes here are modest one-and-a-half and two-story houses with little or nothing in the walls, a shallow attic and a basement rim joist open to the outside. These houses respond well to the basics: seal and insulate the attic, foam the rim joist, and fill hollow walls through small holes.

Small city, small jobs

With 879 housing units at the 2020 census, Parchment is compact, and many projects are a single attic or basement. Some contractors set high minimums for small jobs; we price each job on what it actually takes and list it clearly.

Water and basements

Parchment's 2018 PFAS contamination led to the city switching to Kalamazoo's water system. That does not affect insulation directly, but many basements here are old and can be damp. We check for moisture before foaming any foundation wall.

Rebates

If Consumers Energy provides your service, its rebate chart lists insulation rebates for attics, walls, basement walls and rim joists, with a December 31 application deadline for posted amounts.

Attics in modest houses

Company-era homes usually have small, low attics, often with a few inches of old loose fill or even sawdust or shavings in very old houses. We check what is there, seal the top plates and chimney or stack openings, and bring the depth up toward the DOE's Zone 5 target of R-60, or R-49 added on top of what exists. Kalamazoo County, including Parchment, sits in Climate Zone 5A.

Old masonry and rim joists

Basements under Parchment's early houses can be block or poured concrete with gaps at the sill. Closed-cell foam seals the rim and sill together. If mortar is crumbling or water stains run down the wall, we point it out first, because foam is not a repair for a wet wall.

Cost range

National guides put a typical attic insulation job at about $1,000 to $2,700 and air sealing at $350 to $3,000. Smaller Parchment attics often come in toward the lower end; the written estimate is what you pay.

Parchment Questions

My Parchment house has no wall insulation. Can it be added?

Yes, usually by filling each wall bay through small holes with dense-pack cellulose or injection foam, then patching. We check wiring and signs of moisture first.

Will you do just a rim joist?

Yes. Rim joists are one of the most cost-effective jobs, and we quote them on their own.

What if my attic has old sawdust or wood shavings?

Some very old homes have those. We usually recommend removing it, since it can harbor pests and settle unevenly, then sealing and blowing in new insulation.
